About John Roy

Chicago comic John Roy is a unique voice on modern urban life.

A city dweller all his life, John grew up in Chicago's ethnically diverse Rogers Park neighborhood. Growing up white and Catholic in a neighborhood full of African Americans, Orthodox Jews, Nigerians, Mexicans, Indians, Pakistanis, and every ethnic and religious group imaginable gave John a unique perspective on getting along in a crowded world. John's life saving heart surgery and altruistic parents gave him an appreciation of the importance of comedy as a means to social change. Chicago's rich cultural heritage, economic differences, and fast paced lifestyle contributed to his observations on our rapidly changing country.

After two years in open mics and alternative comedy rooms, John began his professional career at the famous Zanies Comedy Club on Wells St. in Chicago's Old Town. Soon after, he began to tour the country as a full time comedian.

In 2003, he appeared on the CBS television show, Star Search, and was its first champion, earning 100,000 dollars and a development deal with CBS.

A move to Los Angeles traded one city for another, and John began to soak in the cultures, lifestyles, and history of his new home and examine them in his comedy.

John has performed many times on television, including the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Last Comic Standing, Premium Blend, The Very Funny Show, The Early Show, Hollywood Squares, many appearances on Comics Unleashed and The Red Eye, and on programs on VH-1, HBO, and Fuel TV. John has also performed in television and internet commercials for Chili's and Carl's Jr.

John's album, Dressed for Recess, was released in 2008 on RBC Records, and is available nationwide.

John headlines comedy clubs across the United States and Canada. He is a regular performer at some of the best comedy venues in the world, including The Hollywood Improv, The Comic Strip in New York City, The Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood, and the prestigious “Comedy Death Ray” show at the Upright Citizens' Brigade Theater in Los Angeles.

John has performed at the Just For Laughs Festival in Chicago, the HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, the Just For Laughs Tour in Canada, colleges around the United States, and many corporate performances, including performing for the World Bank in 2008.

John has written for several projects, including the Dutton Press book, The College Humor Guide to College, and the upcoming comic book series Power Chords, from Image Comics, which he created with artist David Hahn.
